A sabotage network, which local intelligence says was coordinated by Russia, has been uncovered in Romania. Its members are suspected of involvement in the arson attack on an industrial facility near a state-owned defense industry enterprise in September.
Reuters reports this.
According to Romanian intelligence, the exposed network is involved in a fire at an industrial facility in the central part of the country. It is located near a state-owned enterprise operating in the defense industry.
The special services claim that the network’s coordinators targeted state and private arms production enterprises, as well as other facilities of military and industrial importance.
Meanwhile, prosecutors investigating organized crime are seeking the extradition of three suspects. Two of them are Belarusian citizens detained in Germany, and the third is a Ukrainian citizen detained in Poland. All three are suspected of involvement in the arson.
Romanian President Nicos Dan has previously accused Russia of waging a hybrid war against countries supporting Ukraine, which he said includes drone violations, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, sabotage, and attacks on cargo ships near Romanian waters.
The publication notes that it was unable to promptly obtain a comment from the Russian Embassy in Bucharest. At the same time, Moscow has repeatedly denied similar accusations in the past.
Earlier, Romanian President Nikos Dan announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Constanta and the expulsion of the Russian consul after a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Galati, injuring two civilians.
