Russia has officially approved mass restrictions on mobile internet, saying such measures are ostensibly necessary to counter drones. The Kremlin called the shutdowns “justified and necessary.”

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, citing a statement by Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to the Central Intelligence Agency, the Russian authorities have long been using a strategy of systematically restricting the population’s access to online resources, using arguments about “security.” At the same time, the Internet is being turned off even in regions located more than a thousand kilometers from the border with Ukraine, as happened in Ulyanovsk, where mobile communications were restricted “until the end of the war.”

The Center emphasizes that Peskov’s statement indicates a further strengthening of digital bans. In fact, Russia is building a “digital iron curtain”, creating a system in which the authorities can isolate citizens from information at any time.

As a reminder, in the Ulyanovsk region of Russia, residents were left without mobile Internet – access to the network is prohibited for an indefinite period, until the end of the war against Ukraine.

As reported, mobile operators in Russia and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine may be requiredto disconnect users from mobile and Internet communications at the request of the FSB.
