Ukraine will receive 6.1 billion euros for armaments: EU approved the purchase of missiles for Patriot

The European Commission has approved the allocation of €6.1 billion to Ukraine under the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan. The funds will be used to purchase drones and missiles for Patriot air defense systems, including PAC-3 ammunition.

This was announced on Friday, September 11, by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius.

According to him, the decision officially allows Ukraine to purchase PAC-3 missiles using European credit.

Kubilius noted that to finance arms purchases in third countries, EU member states must adopt a separate decision.

The approved package provides for five exceptions to standard procurement rules. Three of them concern drones and components of Ukrainian production, the cost of which exceeds the established limits. Two more exceptions concern American weapons – PAC-3 missiles, which will be purchased, in particular, through the NATO joint procurement mechanism.

In addition, thanks to this decision, the EU distributed all 28.3 billion euros foreseen in 2026 from the loan for Ukraine’s defense needs.

The European Commission is currently considering requests for an additional payment of €4.7 billion. Ukraine has already received €8.3 billion.

Before transferring funds, the European Commission checks contracts to ensure that they comply with the terms of the Ukraine Support Loan and the procurement rules agreed with the Member States.
