European scientists have found that last month was the second-hottest May on record worldwide.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

This was reported by climate scientists at the European Climate Change Centre. Politico. <\/p>\n

According to the monthly report released today by the European Union’s climate monitoring agency Copernicus, May 2025 was 1.4 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average. <\/p>\n

The good news is that this “breaks an unprecedentedly long sequence of months with temperatures more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial [time],” said Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. But the bad news is that “while this may offer a brief respite for the planet, we expect the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold to be exceeded again soon due to the ongoing warming of the climate system,” he added. <\/p>\n

The scientific organization also said northwestern Europe had experienced an “exceptionally dry spring.” It noted that parts of the region had “the lowest rainfall and soil moisture since at least 1979,” leading to “the lowest spring river flows across Europe since record-keeping began in 1992.” <\/p>\n

Rising global temperatures are mainly the result of the continued burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. But under the Paris climate agreement adopted in 2015, countries pledged to limit global warming to below 2C, and ideally 1.5C, above pre-industrial levels. <\/p>\n

The EU itself also agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Green Deal and achieve climate neutrality by mid-century. <\/p>\n

It should be noted that the same scientists found that this April was also the second-warmest April on record worldwide. It took place after March, which was the warmest March on record. <\/p>\n
