During a recent meeting of EU representatives, Austrian State Secretary Elisabeth Zehtner urged Brussels to “leave room for reconsideration of the position on Russian energy supplies” after peace is achieved.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by the Financial Times.<\/a><\/p>\n

Journalists emphasized that this is the first public initiative of this nature from an EU country that previously took a hard line on refusing Russian gas.<\/p>\n

Before that, only Hungary and Slovakia allowed themselves such rhetoric, while other countries, in particular Italy, discussed it only behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

However, the European Commission has strongly rejected this prospect. European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said that even in the event of a peaceful resolution to the war, “a return to purchasing Russian gas would be an unwise step that would only increase the financing of the Russian military.”<\/p>\n

Amid the European Commission’s preparations to present an official plan for complete energy independence from Russia, Austria’s statement became an unexpected signal of possible cracks in European unity on this issue.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the German government will not resume the transportation of Russian gas<\/a> through Nord Stream 1 and will not launch Nord Stream 2.<\/p>\n
