On June 25, in a momentous development for international justice, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will make his first official visit to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg to sign a landmark agreement with Secretary General Alain Berset \u2014 launching the creation of a Special Tribunal to investigate Russia\u2019s crime of aggression against Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n

It is noted that the agreement includes the Statute of the future tribunal, which will be established within the framework of the Council of Europe, providing a legal basis for holding the Russian leadership internationally accountable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis tribunal, established within the Council of Europe, should be a response to aggression that violates the UN Charter. We are not acting according to double standards, but in line with the principles of international law,\u201d emphasized Alain Berset.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian parliamentarians describe the signing of the agreement as a \u201cdream of justice\u201d finally becoming a reality. Yevheniia Kravchuk, a member of the Verkhovna Rada\u2019s permanent delegation to PACE, highlighted that this decision is a step toward ensuring that aggression never goes unpunished again.<\/p>\n

The future special tribunal is expected to become a key instrument in the pursuit of international justice, aimed at prosecuting the crime of aggression \u2014 a crime currently outside the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
\nAs reported, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, stated that a special tribunal on the crime of aggression will be established within the Council of Europe<\/a>. This could happen as early as 2025. So far, 41 countries have joined the initiative.<\/p>\n

By the way, the group of states working to establish a special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine has completed the preparation<\/a> of the technical and legal documents necessary for its launch under the auspices of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n
