Previously, the US president has repeatedly doubted the usefulness of NATO and even hinted at a possible withdrawal from it, but this time he declared that America will stand shoulder to shoulder with European allies.

This is stated in the Washington Post article.

It is noted that senior officials from Europe said that at the beginning of the key session, Trump positively assessed the increase in defense spending and assured that Russia would not dare to launch aggression against NATO while he leads the United States.

Even before the summit, Trump had shown skepticism about Article 5, NATO’s principle of collective defense, but already at events in The Hague he promised “full support” for the alliance. The president stressed that the United States must stand by its allies “until the end,” whatever that means.

In addition, NATO countries have agreed to significantly increase their military spending — from the traditional 2% of GDP to 5% by 2035. However, these figures take into account not only classic defense needs, but also spending on infrastructure development and assistance to Ukraine, which expands the budget. Some countries have expressed concern about the possible financial burden, but under pressure from the United States they have supported the new long-term goals.

Behind the scenes at the summit, leaders warmly praised Trump for his decisive actions, including the recent strikes on Iran, even joking about NATO’s new motto, “Make NATO Great Again.” Secretary General Mark Rutte called the American president the “father” of the alliance, underscoring his influence.

Trump also spent the night at the royal palace and actively engaged with other heads of state, demonstrating diplomatic skills that helped him gain support for key initiatives.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the president supported the statement of the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission about the destruction of nuclear facilities in Iran, but admitted that the estimates of the destruction are not yet accurate, which has sparked discussions about the reliability of the information.

French President Emmanuel Macron has explained that the decision to increase defense spending is driven by real threats from Russia, not a desire to please Washington. Some other countries, including Spain, are trying to reduce the financial pressure that the new targets could create.

Analysts emphasize that most of the agreements are currently declarative in nature, and real actions are planned to be implemented gradually by 2035. At the same time, the allies are using various methods to optimize cost calculations in order to adapt to new requirements.

As a reminder, one of the most anticipated NATO summits ended in The Hague, Netherlands, on June 25. This meeting was the first since Donald Trump returned to the White House and, despite concerns about the US position, ended with a powerful political signal in support of Ukraine and a significant revision of the Alliance’s defense policy.

As reported, Donald Trump changed his rhetoric towards Volodymyr Zelenskyy after their meeting at the NATO summit in The Hague.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

During the NATO summit in The Hague, Donald Trump unexpectedly changed his approach to the alliance, expressing clear support for its defense goals for the first time in a long time.
