The Baltic countries have notified the UN of their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention banning the use of anti-personnel mines.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Today, Lithuania officially notified the UN Secretary-General of its withdrawal from the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. This decision was not made lightly. Lithuania has no illusions: Putin’s Russia is the greatest long-term existential threat to Europe. It is waging war to achieve political goals, undermining stability and preparing for a long-term confrontation,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budris wrote on the social network X.<\/p>\n

He noted that Lithuania will take all necessary measures in the face of new threats. Budris said that his country will defend “every centimeter of NATO territory.”<\/p>\n

On Friday, June 27, Latvia and Estonia also sent the necessary documents for exit.<\/p>\n

It is noted that withdrawal from the convention takes effect six months after the submission of the relevant documents to the UN Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

Estonia has also sent the necessary documents to the UN to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention.<\/p>\n

“Today, Estonia submitted documents to the UN on its withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention. The lessons of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine show that in order to better protect our country, we should not introduce unilateral restrictions on arms that the adversary does not comply with. By withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, the Estonian Defense Forces will have greater flexibility in choosing the weapons systems, tools, and solutions necessary to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities,” Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna commented on the event.<\/p>\n

He noted that despite withdrawing from the convention, Estonia remains committed to ensuring full compliance with international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Finnish parliament has approved the country’s withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention<\/a> , which bans landmines. In the future, the Defense Forces will be allowed to use such weapons.<\/p>\n

As reported, Europe is preparing to create a new \u201cIron Curtain\u201d \u2014 this time not of concrete, but of millions of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines<\/a> . Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland have announced plans to withdraw from the 1997 Ottawa Convention, which bans the use of anti-personnel mines, and will notify the UN in the coming months.<\/p>\n
