On July 1, the United States will officially lift a number of sanctions against Syria that have been in effect since 2004. The corresponding decision was approved by decree of President Donald Trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in a White House press release issued on June 30.<\/p>\n

As noted, the purpose of this step is to support the process of stabilization and restoration of peace in the country. At the same time, some restrictions will remain in force – in particular, regarding the ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad, his inner circle, as well as individuals involved in human rights violations, drug trafficking, the use of chemical weapons, and ties to terrorist groups, including ISIS and its allies.<\/p>\n

In addition, the document provides for the relaxation of export controls for certain categories of goods, the lifting of bans on the provision of international assistance to Syria, and a review of the status of the country’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who was previously listed as a terrorist.<\/p>\n

President Trump also instructed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to explore the possibility of removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and initiate consultations at the UN on a possible easing of sanctions pressure.<\/p>\n

“The President seeks to see a stable, united, and peaceful Syria, but not at the expense of American interests,” the White House said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Recall that in April, the United States closed three of its eight operational bases in northeastern Syria<\/a> , accordingly, the number of American military personnel deployed in the country decreased from 2,000 to 1,400 people.<\/p>\n

As reported, the European Union is considering the possibility of gradually lifting economic sanctions on Syria.<\/a><\/p>\n
