Germany is tightening control over Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” by introducing new security measures from July 1. From now on, all tankers passing through the country’s territorial waters must confirm the availability of oil pollution insurance coverage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by the German Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n

It is known that many Russian tankers avoid cooperation with proven insurance companies and enter European ports without proper insurance. The new requirement is designed to change this situation and strengthen control over such vessels.<\/p>\n

Transport Minister Patrick Schneider said that additional checks on insurance status would help to better track the activities of the “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea. According to him, this would allow, together with partners in the region, to more effectively combat illegal activities, including by adding violators to sanctions lists.<\/p>\n

The department emphasized that these measures are part of a pan-European strategy to combat the Russian “shadow fleet”, which, in particular, includes old tankers with improper shipping methods that are used to circumvent sanctions.<\/p>\n

If violations are detected, ships may be subject to increased controls or blacklisted. The new rules apply to ships sailing east of the German island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister Johannes Wadeful emphasized that these steps are aimed at increasing pressure on the Russian “shadow fleet” and protecting the ecology of the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the oil tanker Vilamoura exploded off the coast of Libya<\/a> , which, according to the State Security Service, belongs to the Russian “shadow fleet”.<\/p>\n

As reported, an accident involving two tankers, one of which \u2014 the Adalynn \u2014 belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, occurred in the strategic waters near the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> . The collision caused a fire, increased geopolitical tensions in the region and had an immediate reaction in global energy markets.<\/p>\n
