It was on this day in 1776 that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring independence from Great Britain. Thus, the United States of America was born.

Although Congress supported the independence resolution on July 2, it was the date of the signing of the declaration — July 4 — that became entrenched as a symbol of the birth of a new nation.

Thomas Jefferson wrote most of the text. Some historians believe that the actual signing of the document did not occur until August 2, but in historical memory, July was decisive.

How is it celebrated?

This day is associated with large-scale celebrations: parades, picnics, carnivals, barbecues, concerts and, of course, fireworks. In the evening, Americans gather in parks and squares to watch festive volleys to patriotic music. In many cities, it is a grand show.

The colors of the American flag—red, white, and blue—are dominant in decorations, clothing, and symbolism. Military salutes are held in honor of the holiday, including the famous “Union Salute”—one shot fired for each state.

The most famous fireworks displays are held in New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and other major cities. Some states restrict the use of pyrotechnics for safety or weather reasons.

July 4th is also a day off, so Americans usually spend it with family or friends, often outdoors.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 4th, one of the country’s major national holidays.
