Every year on the first Sunday of July, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – a holiday of sailors, marines and all those who defend the maritime borders of the state. In 2025, this date falls on July 6.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The holiday was officially established in 2015 by a decree of President Petro Poroshenko. It became a symbol of rejection of the Soviet legacy and a clear step towards the formation of our own naval traditions.<\/p>\n

The history of the Ukrainian Navy dates back to 1918, when the blue-and-yellow flags were first raised on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet. The modern Ukrainian Navy began to take shape after gaining independence in 1991.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian fleet first made a large-scale statement in 1996 during the “More-96” exercises, which involved dozens of ships, aircraft, and over 2,000 servicemen.<\/p>\n

The holiday has changed several times. In particular, in 2010, during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, it was moved to the last Sunday of July to synchronize with the Russian “Navy Day”. But in 2015, the previous date was restored – as a symbol of state independence and a clear distance from the aggressor.<\/p>\n

Navy Day gained special significance after 2014, when Russian troops occupied Crimea. It was then that Ukrainian sailors proved their loyalty to their oath. Today, during a full-scale war, their contribution to protecting the southern borders, destroying the enemy fleet, and clearing the seas of mines is vital for the entire country.<\/p>\n
