The main goal is to strengthen national security against the threat from Russia, as well as provide military support to Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters, citing official representatives of both countries.

According to Lithuanian Deputy Defense Minister Karolis Aleksa, the government is ready to invest hundreds of millions of euros in the production of both anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. The new facilities are expected to work to strengthen the countries’ defense capabilities and allow them to assist the Ukrainian military.

The Finnish side also confirmed plans to create its own infrastructure for the production of mines. The chairman of the parliamentary defense committee, Heikki Autto, emphasized that such weapons are not only effective, but also economically feasible in the confrontation with Russia.

A number of Finnish defense companies, including Nammo Lapua, Insta, Raikka, and Forcit Explosives, have already expressed interest in joining the production. However, they have refrained from officially commenting on the details of the project.

The first batches of mines are expected to be manufactured next year. The new production initiatives should contribute to pan-European security and strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities in wartime.

Recall, the Baltic countries notified the UN of their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention , which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines.

As reported, the Polish parliament voted to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention , which bans the use and stockpiling of anti-personnel mines. This decision was supported by 413 deputies of the Sejm, 15 opposed, and three abstained.

In addition, the Finnish parliament approved the country’s withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which bans landmines.
