US President Donald Trump has announced a new 35% tariff on Canadian imports. The new tariffs will take effect on August 1. In addition, Washington plans to impose general tariffs of 15% or 20% on most other trading partners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reuters reports<\/a> this.<\/p>\n

Trump officially notified Prime Minister Mark Carney of the decision regarding Canada in a letter published on social media. The US president also threatened that tariffs could be increased if Canada retaliated.<\/p>\n

“We’re just setting our tariffs. We’re just going to announce that all other countries are going to pay either 20% or 15%. We’re going to take care of it now,” Trump commented in an interview with NBC News published on July 11.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mark Carney stressed that Canada will continue to defend its economic interests during negotiations with the US.<\/p>\n

“During the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work to meet the revised deadline of August 1,” Carney wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

He also added that Canada has made important progress in the fight against fentanyl and is ready to continue working with the United States “to save lives and protect communities.”<\/p>\n

The new tariffs are an increase from the current 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods that Trump previously imposed, dealing a blow to Carney’s efforts to strike a new trade deal with Washington.<\/p>\n

Exemptions for goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are expected to remain in place, and there are no plans to change the 10% tariffs on energy and fertilizers.<\/p>\n

In addition to Canada, Trump has in recent days expanded the list of countries against which new tariffs are being imposed. They include Japan, South Korea, and Brazil, which the US has threatened with a 50% tariff. The US has also imposed a 50% tariff on copper.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that the US is close to new trade agreements, the conclusion of which will be announced in the near future.<\/a><\/p>\n

As previously reported, the US federal court for international trade has ruled to block the entry into force of global import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, stating that the head of state exceeded his authority.<\/a><\/p>\n
