Ukraine’s environmental damage from Russian aggression has already exceeded 108 billion euros. The authorities have recorded over 9,000 environmental crimes, which have caused catastrophic consequences for nature, hydropower facilities and subsoil. Almost a quarter of the country remains mined, and key mineral resources are under occupation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has suffered enormous environmental losses as a result of the full-scale war unleashed by Russia. According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, environmental damage to date amounts to at least 108 billion euros.<\/p>\n

The head of the ministry, Svitlana Hrynchuk, said that as of July 2025, more than 9,000 environmental crimes had already been recorded, including mass pollution, destruction of ecosystems, demolitions of hydro-infrastructure facilities, and forest fires as a result of shelling.<\/p>\n

The minister noted that 23% of the country’s territory remains contaminated with mines and explosives, which impedes access to natural resources and poses a danger to the population.<\/p>\n

Damage to hydraulic infrastructure, including dams, pumping stations, and reservoirs, was highlighted. Preliminary estimates suggest that losses in this area have already exceeded $746 million, with restoration needs reaching nearly $11 billion.<\/p>\n

Another painful aspect is the subsoil use sector, which has lost over 10.6 trillion euros due to hostilities, occupation and destruction. According to Svitlana Hrynchuk, about half of all critically important mineral resources of Ukraine are currently located in temporarily occupied regions, which threatens the energy and industrial security of the state.<\/p>\n

The minister emphasized that environmental restoration cannot be postponed until “after the war” – it must begin now.<\/p>\n

“The scale of this ecocide makes the environmental issue not just a quality of life issue \u2014 it is an element of national security. Restoration is not the end, but part of our resistance,” Grinchuk emphasized.<\/p>\n

Ukraine calls on international partners to join in ecological restoration and recognize ecocide as a separate type of war crime. In particular, it is about recording war crimes against the environment in future international tribunals.<\/p>\n

We will remind that in March, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Svitlana Hrynchuk, presented updated data on damage due to hostilities at a meeting of the Environment Council of the EU Member States.<\/a><\/p>\n
