I\u2019ve worked under three Ukrainian presidents and stood on three Maidans as a citizen, not a bystander.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"114\">Authoritarianism doesn&#8217;t arrive overnight \u2014 it creeps in gradually, until the stench becomes impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"116\" data-end=\"240\">The temptation to solve every problem through repression is nothing new. Power, by its very nature, leans in that direction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"242\" data-end=\"485\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Only strong safeguards can hold it back: a real balance of power, an independent and capable judiciary, a strong parliament, professional and free media, and an active civil society. When these safeguards weaken, the temptation grows stronger.<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"shortcode-also\" data-title=\"Read also\" >\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/anti-maidan-tests-the-limits\/\">Anti-Maidan Pushes Boundaries: The Struggle for Ukraine\u2019s Soul<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\n<p data-start=\"82\" data-end=\"317\">I want to share my perspective on what I see happening now: Ukraine is facing another test\u2014whether Russian-style authoritarianism can take root here. And someone is skillfully setting up President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to take the blame.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"447\">This was predictable. The enemy is systematically working to destabilize Ukraine from within while ramping up external pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"640\">In these circumstances, we must be extremely careful with our assessments to avoid &#8220;giving the enemy ammunition,&#8221; but at the same time, we must be honest and united. Silence is not an option!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"753\">It cannot become a situation where &#8220;the law applies only to the loyal, and punishment only to their opponents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"859\">\u201cUnity\u201d cannot be declared by words alone; certain actions can drive society\u2014and the whole nation\u2014apart.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"947\">Without strong internal safeguards to protect democracy, Ukraine\u2019s society is at risk!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"949\" data-end=\"1010\">A smaller authoritarian state will never defeat a larger one.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1144\">But it won\u2019t happen here. Ukraine will not become an authoritarian police state. Our recent history has proven this time and again!<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"shortcode-also\" data-title=\"Read also\" data-right>\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/en\/contempt-from-bankova-is-it-worth-talking-about-problems-during-the-war\/\">Contempt from Bankova: is it worth talking about problems during the war?<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\n<p><em>As a reminder, on July 11, the State Bureau of Investigation conducted<a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/u-kerivnyka-tsentru-protydii-koruptsii-provodiat-obshuky-u-chomu-prychyna\/\">\u00a0searches at the home of Vitaliy Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Center<\/a>. The SBI claims that for a long time, he did not appear at his place of duty, receive a salary, and used a car intended for the military. Subsequently, SBI officers <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/dbr-povidomylo-pro-pidozru-antykoruptsioneru-vitaliiu-shabuninu\/\">reported the Ukrainian activist to the police on suspicion<\/a> of evasion of duty and fraud.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Anti-Corruption Center commented on the searches, stating that <a href=\"https:\/\/prm.ua\/shabunin-pislia-15-hodyn-obshukiv-vlada-zelenskoho-yde-do-avtorytaryzmu-pid-prykryttiam-viyny\/\">Zelensky is building a corrupt authoritarianism during martial law<\/a>, and the cases against Shabunin are a show of force to demonstrate that the authorities can do anything to anyone in the country, no matter how absurd it may seem.
