The Azov Regiment took the initiative to declare July 28 as the Day of Remembrance for those who died in enemy captivity. The symbolic date was chosen to be the night of the terrible crime in Olenivka, when dozens of Ukrainian prisoners were killed in 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service of<\/a> the first building of the Azov National University.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant Colonel Svyatoslav “Kalyna” Palamar, deputy commander of the 1st Corps of the Azov National Guard, in an address to the public called for honoring those who went through the hell of captivity and did not return. According to him, Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who died in captivity are victims of the occupier’s cruelty who cannot be forgotten.<\/p>\n

As is known, on the night of July 28-29, 2022, at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war, mostly soldiers of the Azov regiment, were killed in the colony in Olenivka. This crime became a sore point for the entire Ukrainian society. Russia has never allowed international observers, and the circumstances of the mass murder remain opaque to this day.<\/p>\n

During the 11 years of war, thousands of Ukrainians were taken prisoner. Hundreds of them are nameless or still missing. Some families have been waiting for years for any news of their loved ones. While in captivity, Ukrainians are subjected to torture, humiliation, psychological pressure, mockery, and in some cases, execution.<\/p>\n

“Everyone who died in enemy captivity deserves recognition. This pain should become part of national memory,” said Svyatoslav Palamar.<\/p>\n

According to him, July 28 should become the official Day of Remembrance for those who died in captivity \u2014 not only Azovites, but all defenders and civilians killed by the Russian system.<\/p>\n

Recall that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least 206 Ukrainian defenders have died in captivity.<\/a><\/p>\n
