This holiday is designed to emphasize exemplary performance of official duties, loyalty to the military oath, and to preserve the memory of the heroic peacekeepers who died while performing tasks as part of peacekeeping contingents and personnel.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine unanimously adopted Resolution No. 292-VII “On the Establishment of the Day of Ukrainian Peacekeepers” on May 21, 2013. The resolution stipulates that July 15 will be celebrated as the Day of Ukrainian Peacekeepers at the state level.

The history of Ukraine’s peacekeeping activities dates back to the early 1990s, when political tensions and armed conflicts in Europe, particularly in the former Yugoslavia, became a challenge for the international community. Ukraine took on the responsibility of joining the United Nations forces carrying out a peacekeeping mission in this crisis zone.

On July 3, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution on the participation of a battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the UN peacekeeping forces in the former Yugoslavia. On July 15 of the same year, the first group of Ukrainian peacekeepers, consisting of 42 servicemen, set off to carry out tasks in Sarajevo, a city located in the zone of active hostilities.

Ukrainian peacekeepers faced difficult conditions: artillery shelling, mortar attacks, and sniper fire. Already at the beginning of the mission, Senior Lieutenant Serhiy Topykha died from serious injuries, opening a tragic list of those who died for the sake of peace.

Despite the danger, Ukrainian soldiers faithfully performed their duties – in the first four months alone, over 800 humanitarian convoys were conducted. Since then, Ukrainian peacekeepers have participated in numerous international missions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Tajikistan, Guatemala, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Congo, and other countries around the world.

Over the past 25 years, about 40,000 Ukrainian servicemen have participated in peacekeeping operations, 50 of whom gave their lives in the line of duty. Honoring their memory is the main objective of the Day of Ukrainian Peacekeepers, which is designed to foster patriotism, respect for military service, and nationwide respect for those who defend peace.

It is worth noting that the international UN Peacekeepers Day is celebrated worldwide on May 29. Ukraine, having its own history of participation in peacekeeping operations, established a national holiday on July 15, emphasizing the significant contribution of Ukrainian soldiers to ensuring peace and security in the international arena.

Thus, the Day of Ukrainian Peacekeepers is not only a memory of the past, but also a reminder of the responsibility and dignity of those who today stand guard over peace, serving in the name of the security of the entire planet.

Also follow “ Pryamym ” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

Every year on July 15, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Peacekeepers, a national holiday established to honor the courage, bravery, and professionalism of participants in peacekeeping operations.
