The Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has chosen a preventive measure for the head of the Anti-Corruption Center, Vitaliy Shabunin. He has been assigned a personal obligation, without the use of an electronic bracelet. The court found the suspicion of evasion of duty to be well-founded, but Shabunin himself called the case a political attack on corruption whistleblowers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is noted that on July 15, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv chose a preventive measure for public activist and head of the Central Criminal Investigation Committee Vitaliy Shabunin. According to the court’s decision, he will be under personal obligation until August 20.<\/strong> In particular, he is prohibited from leaving his place of service in the Kharkiv region, communicating with other suspects in the case, attending NACP events, and he must surrender his international passport.<\/p>\n

The trial was accompanied by a number of procedural appeals. Shabunin’s lawyer tried to get the judge disqualified, arguing that the Anti-Corruption Center had previously published materials about her work. The motion for disqualification was considered by another judge, but ultimately rejected, and the case continued to be heard by Judge Svitlana Grechana.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor’s office, in turn, requested stricter restrictions \u2014 in particular, an electronic bracelet. But in the end, the court agreed only to a personal commitment.<\/p>\n

After the hearing, Shabunin himself called the case politically motivated and said that its purpose is to intimidate those who fight corruption. He is convinced that the authorities are trying to “show all whistleblowers that Zelensky and his team can do anything, anytime.” The activist also suggested that the next step could be to limit his communication via social networks.<\/p>\n

“In order to move towards a corrupt autocracy, it must be scary to expose corruption. This is a good example to show that this is not worth doing,” said Vitaliy Shabunin.<\/p>\n

The State Bureau of Investigation also expressed<\/a> its position. The SBI stated that the court, having chosen a preventive measure, actually recognized the suspicion as well-founded. The department recalled that Shabunin is suspected of systematic evasion of military service after mobilization in 2022, as well as of illegal use of an AFU car. The investigation claims that the activist did not appear at the military unit, but instead was \u201con business trips\u201d without performing his service duties, while receiving more than 50 thousand hryvnias in cash benefits every month.<\/p>\n
