Most of Ukraine’s European allies enthusiastically welcomed the US initiative to purchase American weapons for Kyiv. However, not all countries supported the move, including France, which is traditionally considered one of Ukraine’s most important partners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Politico reports<\/a> , French President Emmanuel Macron has long emphasized the need to develop Europe’s own defense industry and focus on procurement within the European market.<\/p>\n

“According to representatives of the French authorities, Paris refuses to participate in the initiative to purchase American weapons because of the desire to preserve and strengthen its own defense industry. In addition, the French government has difficulties with increasing the military budget, as it seeks to contain the deficit and optimize spending,” the publication notes.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the idea of purchasing American weapons mainly belongs to Germany. Berlin believes that this is one of the fastest ways to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons.<\/p>\n

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Germany was “most interested” in implementing such a plan. German officials confirmed in private conversations that the initiative came from their government, Politico reports.<\/p>\n

The publication also highlights a sharp change in the position of the leader of the German Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz. At the beginning of his political career, he promised to “rapidly strengthen Europe in order to achieve real independence from the United States step by step.” However, Merz now openly declares his trust in Donald Trump and the importance of the transatlantic alliance.<\/p>\n

Recall, US President Donald Trump announced that the first batches of Patriot anti-aircraft systems have already been sent to partner countries, which will later transfer them to Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n

As previously reported, due to depletion of stocks , Germany planned to purchase Patriot air defense systems from partners to transfer them to Ukraine.<\/a><\/p>\n
