All that unites those who fight against the Russian invasion at the front or help those who fight in the rear is the unwillingness to dissolve in the “Russian sea.”

Because unlike the Soviets, who proclaimed Ukraine “Soviet in content, national in form” (which created the prerequisites for the transformation of the Ukrainian SSR into an independent Ukraine), the Putin regime denies us the most fundamental right – to be different from Russians, that is, to be ourselves.

However, within the framework of such a Ukrainian identity as “un-Russianness”, which often turns into anti-Russianness, over the 3.5 years of the war there has been a significant drift from liberal values of freedom, rule of law and dignity to right-wing values of gangliness and authoritarianism. Ironically, in a deadly duel with Russia, we are moving away from it on a symbolic level (zealously erasing the historical memory of our common past and denying our own responsibility for the crimes of this past, which Ukrainians committed no less zealously than Russians), but we are increasingly reflecting the fundamental properties of Putin’s Russia.

That is why the war of democracy and autocracy, inclusivity and exclusivity, civilization and barbarism is increasingly turning into a war of two factions, two electoral monarchies. Which, however, does not in any way deny the extremely important fact that one electoral monarchy is the aggressor, and the other is the victim of its unprovoked and illegal attack.

Stress Test for Freedom: How Ukraine Resists the Pull of Russian Authoritarianism

Is there a decrease in the space of freedom and a strengthening of authoritarian tendencies in the course of a long war? Almost always – yes. Because when you are fighting in distant Vietnam, protest movements are a sign of a healthy democracy and a free society. But when you go out to protest against the government, which is waging a legitimate defensive war on its territory, it is perceived in a completely different way.

Does it mean that we should, as Danylo Yanevsky put it, stick our tongues in our asses and not criticize the government? Absolutely not! Because as soon as our drift towards an “electoral monarchy” turns Ukraine into a mirror image of Russia, only with the opposite sign – we have lost. Because little Israel can win a war against big Iran. Because it is essentially different: more motivated, more efficient, more united and more technological. But Little Russia will never defeat Great Russia if it differs from it only in language, historical pantheon, flag and anthem, behind which the same DNA of inefficiency and lack of freedom will appear.

But while rightly criticizing the government, we must do everything to help it end this war, preserving Ukraine. Because preserving Ukrainian statehood is an imperative that leaves chances for rethinking Ukrainian identity in the future. Filling it not only with pack-nationalist, but also with universal meanings of freedom, dignity, and the rule of law. Shifting the emphasis from emancipation from and hatred of others to nurturing and loving one’s own.

“People and horses mixed up”: what’s wrong with the new government in Ukraine

But all this is possible only under two conditions: 1) the end of the war and 2) the preservation of Ukrainian statehood. Everyone who was at the front knows: survival is more important – this is the fundamental prerequisite for any correct transformations in the future. Therefore, throwing down the gauntlet to the authorities, we must remember the first commandment of doctors: do no harm. Taking an unconscious patient to the operating room and saving him without his consent, thank God, is not yet the time.

Again, this doesn’t mean we should stick our tongues up our asses and stop criticizing the government. But when criticizing, we should think, not gush with emotions, speak, not shout, treat, not finish off.

Let’s save Ukraine, end the war – and then elect our Sir Clement Attlee, who, according to most polls (5 out of 6), remains the most popular head of the British government in the entire history of the United Kingdom…

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram .

• Materials published in the “OPINIONS” section reflect the opinion of the author of the publication, who bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
• The editorial staff of prm.ua may not share the opinions expressed in the author’s material.
• The owner of the webpage in the “OPINIONS” section is the author of the publication.

Source: Author’s Facebook page In 3.5 years, the Russian-Ukrainian war has transformed from a war for freedom, democracy, and human dignity into a war for an identity separate from Russia.
