President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a landmark law that significantly changes the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), strengthening control by the Prosecutor General.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The relevant information appeared in the card of bill No. 12414 on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.<\/p>\n

The official publication of the parliament, “Voice of Ukraine”, has already published the text of the law, indicating its entry into force.<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that the data in the project card changed several times. First, a note about the president’s signature appeared, then it disappeared, and then returned again. This caused a wave of discussions and suspicions in political circles and among the public.<\/p>\n

What Zelensky said<\/strong><\/p>\n

After signing the law, the president held a meeting with the heads of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, in particular, NABU Director Semen Kryvonos, SAPO Head Oleksandr Klymenko, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, and SBU Head Vasyl Malyuk.<\/p>\n

“The anti-corruption infrastructure will work. But without external influences, in particular Russian ones. We need to completely cleanse ourselves of this. And there must be more justice,” Zelenskyy said.<\/p>\n

He also assured that NABU and SAPO will continue their work, and the Prosecutor General, according to him, is aimed at “the real inevitability of punishment.”<\/p>\n

“Cases that have been lying idle for years must be investigated,” the president emphasized.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy was also outraged by the situation with high-ranking officials who have been hiding abroad for years, avoiding responsibility, and noted that society demands real results, not the appearance of fighting corruption.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a bill that significantly limits the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP)<\/a> , effectively subordinating their activities to the Prosecutor General.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the heads of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy not to sign the bill<\/a> , which, in their opinion, destroys the independence of these bodies.<\/p>\n

As reported, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office have published an official statement regarding draft law No. 12414, which is being prepared for the second reading in the Verkhovna Rada. The anti-corruption bodies warn that the latest amendments to the document pose a serious threat to the independence of their activities.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition, mass protests were held in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Odessa, Lutsk, and Ivano-Frankivsk against draft law No. 12414, which activists say threatens the independence of the anti-corruption institutions NABU and SAPO. Protesters are demanding that the president immediately veto the document, which could significantly change the balance of Ukraine’s anti-corruption system.<\/a><\/p>\n
