Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp expressed concern about the restriction of the independence of anti-corruption institutions in Ukraine, stressing that this threatens the country’s progress towards EU membership.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions are crucial to its reforms. Restricting their activities would be a serious step backwards,” Veldkamp stressed.<\/p>\n

The Minister stressed that ensuring the independence of NABU and SAP, as well as further progress in the area of the rule of law, remain key conditions for the process of Ukraine’s integration into the EU.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 12414, which allows NABU and SAP to be subordinated to the Office of the Prosecutor General, despite the reservations of anti-corruption organizations, which limits their independence.<\/p>\n

Let us recall that on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a bill that significantly limits the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO)<\/a> , effectively subordinating their activities to the Prosecutor General.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the heads of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy not to sign the bill<\/a> , which, in their opinion, destroys the independence of these bodies.<\/p>\n

However, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a controversial law that significantly changes the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), strengthening control by the Prosecutor General.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office have published an official statement regarding draft law No. 12414, which is being prepared for the second reading in the Verkhovna Rada. Anti-corruption agencies warn: the latest amendments to the document pose a serious threat to the independence of their activities.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition, in Kiev, Lviv, Dnipro, Odessa, Lutsk and Ivano- Frankivsk,<\/a> mass protests took place against bill No. 12414, which, according to activists, threatens the independence of the anti-corruption institutions NABU and SAP.<\/p>\n

By the way, the Verkhovna Rada plans to prepare a submission to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with the aim of repealing Law No. 12414,<\/a> which limits the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).<\/p>\n
