In wartime, Ukraine critically depends on the support of its democratic allies. But in democracies, no aid decision is made in a vacuum \u2014 public sentiment matters. Politicians in allied capitals must weigh not only strategic interests but also the moods, concerns, and views of their citizens. This means every message from Ukraine \u2014 every image, every reform, every controversy \u2014 can shape the political will to continue supporting us.<\/strong><\/div>\n

The Russians know this, and they use it effectively. That is why Ukraine is often portrayed as a weak, corrupt country unworthy of German, British, or American taxpayer support.<\/p>\n

Literally: \u201cDon\u2019t fund Ukraine \u2014 corrupt officials will steal your aid, and the French will only see their taxes spent on Maybachs with Ukrainian plates cruising the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this environment, Ukraine must demonstrate \u2014 consistently and convincingly \u2014 that Russian propaganda lies. That there is justice in Ukraine. The courts defend fairness and protect investment. That law enforcement defends the rule of law. That officials serve the public interest with integrity.<\/p>\n

Instead, we\u2019ve chosen to show the opposite. The only \u2014 albeit symbolic \u2014 independent anti-corruption agency was publicly humiliated and turned into a regular \u201cdistrict office.\u201d The government openly undermines NABU\u2019s independence. An opposition leader is sanctioned simply for being in opposition. Television channels are shut down. Foreign investors complain of obstruction and pressure from the authorities.<\/p>\n

The result: a crisis manufactured by the government itself, with no explanation \u2014 and with direct consequences for continued international aid. And when Russian Telegram channels push the message, \u201cWhy support Ukraine? Just look at what they did to NABU\u201d<\/em> \u2014 what counterargument will our strategic communications teams present?<\/p>\n

NABU is not above criticism. Its performance, efficiency, and even ethical practices are all up for debate. One could argue that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is treating NABU in the same way NABU treats its suspects. Perhaps NABU is simply being hit by the same system it helped to build.<\/p>\n

But choosing this course \u2014 at this moment \u2014 damages the country. It endangers vital support from democratic allies. That is not just short-sightedness. That is criminal irresponsibility.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t just the construction of a dictatorship. It\u2019s the construction of a dictatorship that nobody in the democratic world wants anything to do with.<\/p>\n
