Clashes broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on a disputed section of the border on Thursday, July 24. Civilians were injured in the fighting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clashes began after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia late Wednesday and announced the expulsion of the Cambodian ambassador in Bangkok, after a Thai soldier lost a limb when he was hit by a landmine that the Thais said had recently been planted in the disputed area.<\/p>\n

Clashes continued near the disputed Ta Moan Thom temple on the Cambodian-Thailand border on Thursday, with both countries blaming each other for the clashes.<\/p>\n

The Thai army says Cambodian soldiers have opened fire on a military base in the northeastern province of Surin.<\/p>\n

“Nine people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed in three border provinces,” the Thai army said.<\/p>\n

The Thai Foreign Ministry said that Cambodian troops fired artillery at a military base and also struck civilian areas, including a hospital in the border area, resulting in civilian casualties.<\/p>\n

“The Royal Government of Thailand is ready to strengthen our self-defense measures if Cambodia continues its armed attack and violation of Thailand’s sovereignty,” the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Cambodia accused Thailand of opening fire, saying an F-16 fighter jet dropped bombs on the country.<\/p>\n

“We used air power against military targets as planned,” a deputy spokesman for the Thai army told reporters.<\/p>\n\t

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense said that the planes dropped two bombs on the road. It “strongly condemned” the reckless and brutal military aggression of the Kingdom of Thailand against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia.<\/p>\n

Cambodia’s influential former leader Hun Sen said the country had “no choice but to fight back” against Thailand and urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic buying.<\/p>\n
