The date is no coincidence: it was on the night of July 28-29, 2022 that Russia committed one of the most horrific terrorist attacks — the mass murder of Azovstal defenders in a colony in Olenivka.

It is noted that this year, July 28 is celebrated for the first time as the Day of Mourning and Commemoration of the Defenders of Ukraine, volunteers, as well as civilians who were executed, tortured, or died in captivity. The Verkhovna Rada adopted a corresponding decision on July 23, 2025.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, in an address to citizens, emphasized that even in inhumane conditions of captivity or captivity, Ukrainians retain faith and hope.

“Their indomitability is an example for all of us and a challenge to the enemy, who is unable to break our will. Ukraine will do everything to worthily honor the memory of those who gave the most valuable thing for freedom and peace,” he emphasized.

At the same time, the 1st corps of the Azov National University, whose comrades were victims of the terrorist attack, published a deeply emotional appeal.

“Our sadness is not silence, but action. Because memory is not only about grief, but about responsibility. About the duty to return our loved ones and not allow anyone to be forgotten. About just punishment of the executioners, because without this the crime will be repeated. This is the moral duty of all Ukrainians. This is a recognition that even in captivity our people remained warriors, and the state has no right to forget them,” the message says.

As is known, on the night of July 28-29, 2022, Russia committed one of the most brutal crimes against Ukrainian prisoners of war – the mass murder of the defenders of Mariupol, in particular the fighters of the Azov OZSP, in a colony in occupied Olenivka.

A few days before the tragedy, 198 soldiers were transferred to a separate barracks. In the evening of July 28, the guards forced everyone inside, hinting at imminent death. At about 11:45 p.m., explosions rang out in the building and a fire broke out. 47 people died immediately, six died later from blood loss, and more than 100 were injured. No medical assistance was provided until morning.

Russia closed the crime scene to international observers. The UN mission led by General Carlos dos Santos Cruz lasted until January 2023, after which it was disbanded due to lack of access. Ukraine still demands an objective investigation into the tragedy.

Thousands of Ukrainians still remain in captivity. Their families continue to fight for their return, keeping the memory of the dead and hope for the living. Today, Ukraine not only remembers those who died, but also testifies that responsibility for this crime will definitely come.

Recall that in early July, the Azov Regiment took the initiative to declare July 28 the Day of Remembrance of those killed in enemy captivity . The symbolic date was chosen as the night of the terrible crime in Olenivka, when dozens of Ukrainian prisoners were killed in 2022.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Today, July 28, Ukraine is commemorating for the first time at the national level the memory of military personnel, volunteers, and civilians who died, were tortured, or executed in captivity.
