Residents across Russia are increasingly reporting sudden and prolonged mobile internet outages, which are not due to a technical glitch but rather a deliberate policy by the Russian authorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> the American publication The New York Times.<\/p>\n

According to analysts, the mobile communications shutdowns are related to attempts to interfere with the navigation of Ukrainian drones, which can use data networks for orientation. At the same time, voice communication usually remains available, since only the channel responsible for Internet traffic is turned off.<\/p>\n

Since June, similar restrictions have been implemented in many regions of Russia, often without any warning. According to the volunteer initiative “In Contact”, as of the end of July, mobile Internet outages were recorded in at least 73 of the 83 regions of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n

“The Kremlin demands that local authorities urgently protect regions from drones, but in fact they have no other tools than to turn off the internet,” explains Mikhail Klimarev, head of the Russian Society for Internet Protection.<\/p>\n

The outages, he said, are not centralized \u2014 decisions are made at the local level, usually immediately after reports of an air attack threat. The Russian Ministry of Digital Development did not respond to official requests from journalists.<\/p>\n

The consequences of such measures are already being felt by millions of citizens. The outages affect banking services, GPS navigation, gas station payments, and the operation of cards and mobile applications.<\/p>\n

“It was a digital gulag,” says Kateryna, 32, who was traveling from St. Petersburg to Moscow with her partner. She says the connection went down along the way, leaving them unable to pay for gas or use online cards.<\/p>\n

The internet is not the only infrastructure to suffer from drone attacks. Over the weekend alone, nearly 300 flights were canceled in Moscow due to an aerial threat. Airports were paralyzed and passengers were stranded without information or communication.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that, according to NATO and the United States, Russia and China will be ready to confront the West in 2027.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, another year of \u201cbelt tightening\u201d awaits the Russians. The Russian Federation predicts a drop in oil prices to $55 by 2025-2026.<\/a><\/p>\n
