The European Commission has made strict demands on Ukraine to restore the independence of anti-corruption bodies. During personal talks with Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the independence of the NABU and SAPO is a prerequisite for European integration, and there will be no compromises in this area. The EU is warning Kyiv of possible consequences if these demands are not met.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is noted that the European Union is concerned about the situation surrounding Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions and directly points to the risks for Ukraine’s further progress towards EU membership.<\/p>\n

The European Commission spokesperson, commenting on the vote in the Verkhovna Rada, emphasized that the draft law of the President of Ukraine, aimed at restoring the independence of the NABU and the SAPO, must be adopted immediately.<\/p>\n

According to the EC representative, in a conversation with President Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen clearly outlined the European Union’s position: independent anti-corruption bodies are the foundation of the rule of law<\/strong> , and respect for these principles is a basic condition for joining the EU.<\/p>\n

“Compromise is impossible. Ukraine, as a candidate country, must fully comply with European standards. We expect decisive steps from the Ukrainian authorities to restore the trust of citizens and international partners,” the European Commission spokesman emphasized.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the European Commission expressed serious concern about attempts to limit the independence of anti-corruption bodies<\/a> in Ukraine. This concerns draft law No. 12414, which provides for the subordination of the activities of NABU and SAPO to the Prosecutor General.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada voted for a bill that significantly limits the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP)<\/a> , effectively subordinating their activities to the Prosecutor General, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed it.<\/p>\n

As reported, society negatively perceived the actual destruction of anti-corruption bodies<\/a> . On July 22 and 23, hundreds of people in many cities of Ukraine took to rallies against Law No. 12414.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a law on “strengthening the powers of the NABU and the SAPO.”<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition, several MPs who supported the scandalous bill No. 12414, which narrows the powers of the NABU and the SAPO, publicly admitted their mistake and declared their readiness to correct the situation<\/a> . The reaction followed a wave of public outrage and criticism from Ukraine’s international partners.<\/p>\n
