The European Commission has publicly defended the results of the competition for the position of head of the Bureau of Economic Security of Ukraine (BEU), which was canceled by the government. Brussels insists that Kyiv is obliged to adhere to a transparent appointment procedure, as this is part of its obligations to the EU on the path to membership.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brussels emphasized that the election of the head of the BEB is not just a personnel decision – it is a marker of Ukraine’s fulfillment of obligations within the framework of the EU accession process. The appointment should be based on an open competition and the personal merits of the candidate.<\/p>\n

“This is necessary to advance the reform of the BEB and ensure its independent and effective functioning,” the European Commission said.<\/p>\n

In its 2024 EU enlargement report, the European Commission has already emphasized the need to implement the law on the reform of the BEB as soon as possible. The European Union believes that this body should play a key role in the fight against financial crimes in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The government’s cancellation of the competition results caused a negative reaction not only in the anti-corruption environment, but also among international partners. Earlier, the Head of Cooperation Programs of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Stefan Schl\u00f6ning, directly stated that the election of the BEB director is a critically important step to demonstrate commitment to reforms.<\/p>\n

Amid concerns about attempts to make NABU and SAPO independent, Brussels is increasingly reminding Kyiv that integrity, transparency, and due process are the foundation of the EU membership drive. Ignoring these requirements risks undermining the EU\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the European Commission put forward tough demands to Ukraine to restore the independence of anti-corruption bodies<\/a> . European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during personal talks with Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasized that the independence of NABU and SAPO is a prerequisite for European integration, and there will be no compromises in this area. The EU warns Kyiv of possible consequences if these demands are not met.<\/p>\n

The day before, the European Commission expressed serious concern about attempts to limit the independence of anti-corruption bodies<\/a> in Ukraine. This concerns draft law No. 12414, which provides for the subordination of the activities of the NABU and the SAPO to the Prosecutor General.<\/p>\n
