Russia’s largest automaker AvtoVAZ has suspended production from July 29 to August 11 inclusive. The official reason is “corporate vacation,” but in reality the decision is related to a critical situation on the market: the company’s warehouses are overflowing with unsold cars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russian media reports that the company’s management hopes to at least partially unload dealerships during this time, which can no longer accommodate new Lada batches. This means a surplus of 400,000 to 500,000 units.<\/p>\n

The company placed particular emphasis on the “Lada Iskra” model, which was positioned as a flagship novelty with a high level of localization. However, in practice, problems arose: the workshops recorded a shortage of parts, technical defects, electrical failures, and poor assembly quality. Because of this, the production of basic trim levels was postponed, and serial production was limited.<\/p>\n

Despite claims of almost complete import substitution, the Iskra still contains many components from China, including in the suspension systems, trim, and electronics. Some components were left unchanged after Renault left the project. Some components still bear the markings of the previous manufacturer.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, dealers are not having time to sell their existing cars, even despite discounts of up to 300,000 rubles, loans, and promotional programs. At many sites, cars are standing unloaded, so distributors are urgently renting new storage areas.<\/p>\n

Problems have also gripped other enterprises in the Russian auto industry. In July, GAZ, KamAZ, UAZ and other plants switched to a four-day work week. They are trying to reduce production volumes in the face of falling demand. Workers are not being laid off yet, but most of the assembly lines are working “on a stock basis”, and not for specific orders.<\/p>\n

Dealers also report difficulties with logistics: new cars arrive with delays, sometimes without proper documentation, and in a number of regions, shipments are stuck for long periods of time.<\/p>\n

Even if AvtoVAZ produces 4,000 Iskra units by the end of the year, it will not change the overall picture. In the current conditions, the market does not have time to absorb the production, and the crisis in the industry is only deepening.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the largest Russian truck manufacturer KamAZ announced that starting August 1, it will switch to a four-day work week for units that are not fully loaded.<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition, the profit of Russia’s largest truck manufacturer, KamAZ, decreased 28 times last year.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, in June 2025, passenger car production in Russia decreased by 28.2% compared to the same period last year, to 45 thousand units.<\/a><\/p>\n
