U.S. President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on India, set to take effect on August 1. The 25% duty comes in response to India’s continued purchases of Russian military equipment and energy, making it, along with China, one of the largest consumers of Russian exports.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump announced<\/a> the new trade policy on his social media platform, Truth Social.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that India maintains one of the highest tariff policies in the world and imposes some of the most restrictive trade barriers.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember that while India is our friend, we have done relatively little business with them over the years because their tariffs are too high \u2014 some of the highest in the world \u2014 and they impose the toughest and most intractable non-monetary trade barriers of any country,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

The former U.S. president added that India\u2019s purchases of Russian energy and weapons are “unacceptable,” stating:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine, this is not good!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Trump announced that, beginning August 1, India will be subject to a 25% tariff \u201calong with a penalty\u201d due to its continued strategic partnership with Russia.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, an Indian company supplied Russia with the explosive HMX, which is used in missile technology, despite the risk of being subject to US sanctions.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that India will be able to meet its oil needs from alternative sources if Russian supplies are cut off by US sanctions.<\/a><\/p>\n
