US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order raising tariffs on Canadian imports from 25% to 35%. The decision took effect on Friday, August 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> on the official website of the White House.<\/p>\n

The document notes that the United States has repeatedly called on Canada to do more to counter the flow of fentanyl and other illicit substances entering the U.S. However, according to Trump, Ottawa’s actions have been insufficient.<\/p>\n

“Canada has failed to adequately stop the flow of deadly drugs and has instead implemented retaliatory measures that have undermined U.S. efforts. As a result, I have decided to increase tariffs to 35% to appropriately respond to the threat,” the president said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The White House stressed that Canada had every opportunity to step up its fight against drug cartels, but had not shown sufficient effort. This, according to Trump, was the basis for a new round of trade pressure.<\/p>\n

The decree stipulates that the new tariffs will be in effect until the Canadian side shows “concrete results in combating the spread of fentanyl.”<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the US Federal Trade Commission has ruled to block the entry into force of global import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, stating that the head of state exceeded his authority.<\/a><\/p>\n
