The Russian Pacific Fleet base in Kamchatka, which houses many nuclear submarines, was damaged by a tsunami caused by a strong earthquake.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> in The Telegraph.<\/p>\n

At the Rybachy base in Krasheninnikov Bay in southern Kamchatka, part of one of the piers has shifted from its original position, indicating that it has broken away from the berth.<\/p>\n

The waves caused by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake reached the base 15 minutes after the tremors began.<\/p>\n

The naval base houses modern nuclear submarines of the Borei type and Soviet Deltas.<\/p>\n

“According to preliminary analysis, they were not damaged because they were not moored at the damaged pier at the time of the tsunami,” The Telegraph noted.<\/p>\n

Dr. Siddharth Kaushal, a research fellow at the British Joint Institute for Defense Research, noted that no signs of damage to the submarine fleet were found in satellite images.<\/p>\n

“It looks like there was a surface ship moored at the pier, not a submarine, which is noticeable,” he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier it became known that a powerful earthquake occurred in the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia, the magnitude of which reached 8.8. The event caused a tsunami, the height of the waves in some places exceeded 3 meters<\/a> .<\/p>\n
