Ukraine has unveiled a new defense development, the Mangust jet drone, designed to intercept high-speed air targets, including enemy kamikaze drones Shahed-136. It is designed as a reusable platform with the ability to refuel and relaunch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was announced by<\/a> the project’s executive director, Gennady Suldin, in an interview with Defender Media.<\/p>\n

According to the developers, the “Mongoose” is an aircraft-type drone equipped with a jet engine and an autonomous guidance system. Its concept is based on rapid approach to the target, targeted destruction and continuation of the mission without the need to destroy the interceptor itself.<\/p>\n

Tactical and technical characteristics<\/strong>
The drone is capable of reaching speeds of 300\u2013310 km\/h, which allows it to effectively catch up with the current Shahed-136\/”Geran-2″ models. The maximum flight altitude is up to 5,000 meters, the combat radius is approximately 12 km. According to engineers, this resource is sufficient to combat existing and promising versions of enemy UAVs, including their modernized jet modifications, which, according to available data, develop a cruising speed of up to 500 km\/h.<\/p>\n

The Mongoose also has a thermal guidance system developed from scratch, which focuses on the infrared radiation of the target. Visual identification is carried out from a distance of up to 800 meters, and the auto-guidance system is activated in the final phase – approximately 150-200 meters from the target. From this moment on, the drone switches to automatic attack mode, without the participation of the operator.<\/p>\n

Weapons and interception method<\/strong>
To engage air targets, the Mongoose is equipped with a multi-barreled shotgun. This solution is based on the principle of maximum efficiency in close air combat. The weaponry is aimed at disabling the most vulnerable components of an enemy drone \u2014 in particular, the engine or propeller. The use of shotgun ammunition allows you to increase the area of damage and increase the probability of successful interception without the need for precise aiming.<\/p>\n

After the attack, the Mongoose can either continue flying in search of the next target, or return to base for maintenance, refueling, and relaunch.<\/p>\n

Economic efficiency and potential<\/strong>
The developers do not disclose the exact cost of one interceptor, but note that in the event of successfully destroying at least 10\u201312 Shaheds, the Mongoose turns out to be a much more profitable solution than using disposable interceptor drones.<\/p>\n

The new drone is already undergoing refinement and testing, and in the future may become one of the key tools for tactical counteraction to air threats.<\/p>\n

As Gennady Suldin noted, the team of engineers from the company “Technari” has already completed the formation of the first full-fledged squadron of interceptor drones. Currently, preparations are underway to transfer prototypes to anti-aircraft missile brigades for combat testing and integration into the air defense system.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Ukrainian company Odd Systems, known for producing Kurbas thermal imaging cameras, announced a strategic cooperation with the leading Danish defense company Terma. The main goal of the partnership is to create an affordable air defense system to combat enemy drones.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, Ukraine is undergoing an unprecedented expansion of defense production \u2014 currently, about 800 enterprises operate in the sector, including 100 state-owned and over 700 private. Over the past three years, weapons production has increased 35 times, and howitzer production has increased 15 times.<\/a> In times of war, the country is relying on its own missiles, armored vehicles, and drones to reduce dependence on foreign supplies.<\/p>\n
