The Nikolaev region has completely lost its corn harvest and about 50% of its sunflower crop as a result of a prolonged drought, which has been going on for the second year in a row.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The head of the Nikolaev OVA Vitaly Kim reported this on the Espresso TV channel.<\/p>\n

“The drought caused a lot of problems. We lost all the corn – about 400 thousand hectares. Almost half of the sunflowers also died – and this is our main crop, which was extremely necessary. In general, the drought is already the second year – and this is a disaster,” the head of the region noted.<\/p>\n

According to Kim, the second consecutive extremely dry season, combined with abnormal heat, is causing significant damage to the region’s agricultural sector.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In addition, regional authorities are negotiating to simplify logistics for farmers. In particular, this concerns permission for trucks with grain to move during curfew. An appeal has also been sent to the government to provide state support.<\/p>\n

Let us recall that a massive invasion of locusts has been recorded in Dnipropetrovsk region, which is approaching from the dried-up Kakhovka reservoir. The insects have affected fields in Kherson, Zaporizhia, Odessa and Vinnytsia regions. Due to the heat and drought, locusts are rapidly multiplying, attacking sunflower crops and can destroy up to 100% of the harvest.<\/a><\/p>\n
