The European Union has positively assessed the actions of the US President Donald Trump administration aimed at increasing pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by the representative of the European Commission Anita Gipper,Ukrinform<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Firstly, Russia is not interested in peace. Ukraine wants peace, the EU wants peace. No one strives for it more than Ukraine and the European Union. Secondly, we welcome any pressure, including from the United States, on Russia using all necessary tools to force it to agree to a ceasefire,” Gipper noted.<\/p>\n

She stressed that the European Union is in constant contact with international partners and coordinates sanctions policy with them. At the same time, the European Commission representative declined to comment on the EU’s likely steps in the event of new US sanctions after the deadline that President Trump set for Putin on August 8.<\/p>\n

“The 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia is due to come into force by the end of the week. At the same time, we understand that economic restrictions need to be constantly updated, especially due to attempts to circumvent them by sanctioned companies,” she explained.<\/p>\n

Gipper noted that public discussion of possible EU actions in response to US sanctions is premature. But, according to her, Brussels is set to further increase pressure on Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU intends to continuously increase pressure on Russia \u2013 both through sanctions and through other available instruments,\u201d the European Commission spokesperson concluded.<\/p>\n
