The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a new package of sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers if the Kremlin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by August 8.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Financial Times, citing sources in the White House.<\/p>\n

The new sanctions, which target older vessels that Russia uses to export oil around Western restrictions, could be the first example of Washington taking tougher action since Trump returned to power.<\/p>\n

According to sources, imposing restrictions on vessels, rather than just companies or managers, has proven effective \u2014 buyers are avoiding the fleet featured on the lists.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration sees this move as a signal that if Moscow does not negotiate, economic pressure will increase. Sources emphasize that in recent weeks the Kremlin has ignored previous deadlines and at the same time intensified attacks on Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“The president made it clear: either Moscow sits down at the negotiating table or faces painful consequences,” said White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly.<\/p>\n

The key stage in the negotiations is expected to be the visit to Moscow by US President Donald Trump’s special representative, Steve Witkoff. He is due to arrive in the Russian capital on Wednesday. Trump’s further decisions will depend on the outcome of these talks.<\/p>\n

“It all depends on what Witkoff comes back with. If there is no result, Trump will be furious,” the FT quotes a source close to the administration.<\/p>\n
