Panama is tightening its rules for registering commercial vessels, putting pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to transport Russian oil to circumvent sanctions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

In August, Panama will stop registering oil tankers older than 15 years.<\/p>\n

“This move will have a significant impact on global maritime trade, as Panama is the second largest registry of commercial vessels in the world,” the SWR noted.<\/p>\n

In addition, additional inspections of tankers will be carried out every three months to ensure compliance with certification requirements for vessels flying the Panamanian flag.<\/p>\n

Intelligence noted that such restrictions would affect a significant part of the Russian “shadow fleet”, since the average age of tankers transporting Russian oil is over 20 years.<\/p>\n

In addition, two weeks earlier, the Maritime Administration of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas announced that vessels owned, operated by, or involved in trade with Russia and flying the Bahamian flag would be removed from the register.<\/p>\n

They stated that if ships under the Bahamian flag fall under sanctions, they will be removed from the state ship register.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a new package of sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers<\/a> if the Kremlin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by August 8.<\/p>\n
