A fire hazard has been reported once again at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, this time in the cargo port area near the reactor units. Burning dry reeds at the site of the destroyed Kakhovka reservoir, along with smoke outside the plant\u2019s protected perimeter, pose a direct threat to nuclear, radiation, and fire safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the press service<\/a> of the Ministry of Energy.<\/p>\n

According to the agency, heavy smoke has been reported in the area adjacent to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, specifically in the cargo port zone. It is known that a fire broke out there, likely caused by the ignition of dry reeds at the site of the former Kakhovka reservoir, which was destroyed by Russian forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to available information, dry reeds are burning at the site of the Kakhovka reservoir destroyed by the Russians,\u201d Energoatom<\/a> stated.<\/p>\n

The cargo port is located outside the plant\u2019s protected perimeter, but its proximity to critical infrastructure raises serious concerns. Experts warn that any fires in the vicinity of the station could lead to unpredictable consequences, especially under Russian occupation, where key nuclear, radiation, and fire safety standards are routinely violated.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that Russian military forces continue to maintain equipment and personnel on the territory of the Zheleznodorozhny Nuclear Power Plant, exerting pressure on Ukrainian staff. Such actions constitute a gross violation of international law and nuclear safety standards, while recurring fires and smoke have already become systemic.<\/p>\n

This is not the first incident of this kind: on August 11, 2024, cooling tower No. 1 of the station\u2019s technical water supply system was destroyed by fire, and on July 19, 2025, large-scale smoke was reported due to a forest fire near the plant.<\/p>\n

The crisis center of NNEGC Energoatom is closely monitoring the situation. Ukrainian authorities warn that any provocations or hostilities near the ZNPP could threaten not only Ukraine but all of Europe.<\/p>\n

We would like to add that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed deep concern over the latest IAEA data<\/a>, which once again confirms Russia’s cynical and irresponsible use of the Zaporizhzhia NPP as a military facility. The department emphasized that the station has effectively become a “nuclear shield” to cover the shelling of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Russian occupiers struck a power line connecting the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP<\/a> with the unified power system of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, in May, as a result of enemy shelling, the temporarily occupied Zahidna NPP lost power to one of its two power supply lines<\/a> and was under threat of a blackout.<\/p>\n

By the way, Ukraine demands that the IAEA leadership take a clear position on the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and not contribute to the legitimization of Russian control over the plant.<\/a><\/p>\n
