The American Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin is trying to use the upcoming meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which will take place on August 15 in Alaska, as a symbol of an equal dialogue between the two world powers. Russian propagandists even compare this summit to the Yalta Conference of 1945, but such analogies are manipulative and designed to exaggerate Moscow’s diplomatic weight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you know, a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is scheduled for August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. The Kremlin is actively promoting the idea that this summit has historical significance, trying to put it on a par with the Yalta Conference of 1945, when the leaders of the US, Great Britain, and the USSR determined the post-war world order.<\/p>\n

Thus, on August 13, the leading Russian negotiator and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev stated that the Yalta Conference “won World War II” and that Putin’s meeting with Trump would supposedly “prevent World War III.” Alexey Chepa, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, supported similar rhetoric, calling on the US and Russia to “talk as friends.”<\/p>\n

The head of the occupation administration of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, even suggested that Trump visit the occupied peninsula to achieve a “new Yalta peace.” Russian media picked up on this topic, emphasizing that “people who have a real influence on global processes” will sit at the negotiating table in Anchorage.<\/p>\n

ISW analysts consider such statements to be part of Moscow’s information campaign. In their opinion, Russia seeks to present the very fact of the meeting as its own diplomatic victory and create the impression that it is an equal partner of the United States, despite the real imbalance in the military, economic and political spheres.<\/p>\n

ISW emphasizes that parallels with the Yalta Conference are incorrect, as that meeting ended with an agreement on the post-war structure of Europe, and the current summit does not envisage any agreements on ending the war in Ukraine. Trump and other US representatives have repeatedly stated that the meeting on August 15 will be limited in nature and will not lead to the signing of any peace agreements.<\/p>\n

What is the Yalta Conference?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Yalta Conference was held from February 4 to 11, 1945, at the Livadia Palace in Yalta, Crimea. It was one of the key meetings in the final period of World War II.<\/p>\n

The conference was attended by the leaders of the “Big Three”: US President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.<\/p>\n
