The Kremlin plans to use the Alaska summit to divert attention from peace talks and obtain economic aid from the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in a report by the Institute for the Study of War.<\/p>\n

“The Kremlin seeks to push the Donald Trump administration towards economic rapprochement. This is evidenced by the Kremlin’s inclusion of Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev in the delegation to Alaska,” the report says.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the summit, Dmitriev argued that Alaska was a historical part of Russia, attempting to use the summit to present Russia as a world power equal to the United States.<\/p>\n

The presence of Dmitriev and Siluanov at the Alaska summit is likely intended to present the summit as a potential business deal.<\/p>\n

In particular, on August 14, Russian Presidential Advisor Yuri Ushakov stated that, in addition to discussing Ukraine, Trump and Putin would also discuss bilateral cooperation “in the trade and economic sphere.”<\/p>\n

Russia also reported that Putin and Trump “may” discuss sanctions and other economic issues.<\/p>\n

“Russia and the United States will in any case conclude an economic agreement after the summit in Alaska,” said a deputy of the Russian State Duma.<\/p>\n

Such statements are likely part of a coordinated effort by Russia to use the Alaska summit to obtain much-needed economic aid from the United States.<\/p>\n

“Any US acceptance of Russian economic agreements without reciprocal steps by Russia on Ukraine would weaken the important economic leverage that the US currently has over Russia,” the report said.<\/p>\n
