Today, August 15, talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will take place in Anchorage, Alaska. The start is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. Kyiv time. There are serious concerns among experts and politicians that the talks will result in a “territorial exchange,” that is, in effect, the legalization of occupied Ukrainian lands by the Russian Federation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On August 6, US President Donald Trump informed European leaders of his intention to meet with Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin<\/a> and later organize a trilateral meeting with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n

It later became known that Trump’s meeting with Putin would take place on August 15, 2025 in the US state of Alaska in the city of Anchorage. Earlier, during the signing of the declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Trump said that the agreement to end the war in Ukraine was considering the possibility of exchanging territories. According to Trump, these are territorial concessions that are beneficial to both sides.<\/p>\n

In response, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was ready to work together with US President Donald Trump and international partners for a just peace, but ruled out any territorial concessions to Russia<\/a> .<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the American Institute for the Study of War expressed its belief that the Kremlin plans to turn the planned summit in Alaska into a tool of informational and diplomatic influence to undermine the unity of the United States and Europe<\/a> in support of Ukraine. Analysts also warned that even if a ceasefire agreement is reached, Russia will most likely violate it, accusing Ukraine of breaking the agreements, as it already did in the spring of 2025.<\/p>\n\t

Why Alaska?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On August 12, it was officially confirmed that the meeting of the presidents of the United States and Russia will take place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska<\/a> . According to open sources, this is the first meeting of the leaders of the two countries on US territory since 1988.<\/p>\n

Anchorage is already preparing for the meeting: the activity of officials and journalists is increasing. Meanwhile, data from the US Federal Aviation Administration has emerged about the closure of airspace around the city that day, indicating significant security measures.<\/p>\n

The city itself has become a center of global diplomacy<\/a> ahead of the presidents’ meeting. The U.S. Secret Service and Russian security services have stepped up security measures for the leaders, booking accommodations and transportation, and preparing a comprehensive security plan that includes symmetrical actions on both sides.<\/p>\n

According to The Guardian, this American state is not exactly convenient for holding the summit, but there are a number of factors that influenced the choice. First of all, the region’s remoteness from Ukraine and Europe is emphasized, so during the meeting they will be pushed to the background. Despite the fact that Trump is theoretically ready to allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in the summit, Putin will be against it.<\/p>\n\t

Additionally, Alaska is a safe haven for the Russian dictator<\/a> , who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for deporting Ukrainian children to Russia, but neither Washington nor Moscow recognizes the ICC. There are also no \u201cunfriendly countries\u201d through which Putin would have to fly.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is noted that US-Russia and US-USSR summits have often been held in cold regions. In particular, it highlights the meetings in Helsinki in 2018, Reykjavik in 1989, and Birmingham and Shropshire in 1998.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the talks could include discussions on territory swaps and compromises that would leave neither side completely satisfied. At the same time, White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said that it was Putin who approached Trump with the initiative to hold a personal meeting.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the meeting, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia should be based on the current front line<\/a> . Taking this line of combat contact, the US will try to find a negotiated solution, the official added. At the same time, he noted that the proposals in the peace agreement will probably not satisfy either Ukraine or Russia.<\/p>\n\t\t
