The decision was made for security reasons due to risks associated with drones and potential incidents in border airspace.

This is reported by LRT .

The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications, at the request of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has decided to close part of the airspace near the Belarusian border. This is a preventive step aimed at protecting the population and ensuring the safety of civil aviation.

The department explained that the main reason was the growing risks due to possible violations of Lithuanian airspace by unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, it is necessary to create conditions for the Lithuanian military to perform peacetime tasks.

Part of the airspace has been closed since last Wednesday, and this ban will last at least until October 1. In some cases, flights will still be allowed – only after approval by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The Ministry of Defense does not rule out that the restriction may be extended if the threat from drones entering the territory of Lithuania persists.

The Transport Competence Agency recalls that the length of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border is 679 kilometers, but it is not currently disclosed which section of the airspace is closed.

The decision was made against the backdrop of the large-scale Zapad-2025 exercises, which are traditionally viewed by the Baltic countries and NATO as a potential factor of increased threat to regional security.

By the way, on August 1, a drone was found in Lithuania, which flew into the country from Belarus on July 28. It was spotted at the Gaižiunai military training ground in the Jonau district.

As a reminder, earlier, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalenė stated that a Gerbera UAV had flown into the country from Belarus .

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

Lithuania has temporarily restricted civil aviation flights along part of its border with Belarus ahead of the Zapad-2025 Russian-Belarusian military exercises.
