However, according to Politico , which is based on four diplomatic sources, the new restrictions will not affect imports of Russian energy resources.

The next round of sanctions is expected to be officially presented next month. The main emphasis will be on combating the so-called “shadow fleet” – ships used by Russia to circumvent existing sanctions, as well as companies that facilitate such schemes.

The most powerful impact, analysts say, could be a system of secondary sanctions, that is, measures against those companies or countries that continue to cooperate with Russia. However, as Politico notes, such tools currently remain at the disposal of the United States.

The journalists also mention that in the context of geopolitical processes, many experts suggest that the recent meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska could have taken place against the backdrop of Washington imposing new tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. This could be a prologue to tougher restrictions aimed, in particular, at Russia’s economic interaction with China.

In addition to economic instruments, the EU is also considering other options to curb Russian activity. In particular, it is about restricting the freedom of movement of Russian diplomats within the Schengen zone. Supporters of this approach are convinced that the full mobility of diplomats can be used to conduct intelligence and subversive operations.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky spoke quite directly about this:

“Just as Cato the Elder once insisted on the destruction of Carthage, I will not stop insisting on the abolition of free movement for Russian diplomats. This is an unjustified advantage that the aggressive regime uses for its sabotage.”

It is expected that an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers will take place at the end of the week, where further sanctions initiatives will be discussed with the participation of Kai Kallas.

Despite the fact that individual member states, in particular Hungary and Slovakia, traditionally oppose increasing pressure on Russia, diplomats hope to reach a consensus and adopt the package.

“Look at what happened the previous 18 times,” said one EU representative, alluding to previous experience in reaching compromises.

As a reminder, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU plans to adopt a new package of sanctions against Russia in September 2025.

As reported, the EU will impose new sanctions against Russia if Putin refuses to participate in a trilateral meeting with the presidents of Ukraine and the United States.

In addition, the European Commission stated that sanctions against Russia will remain in force and will be strengthened as long as the aggression against Ukraine continues . Brussels emphasizes: any negotiations without a real ceasefire will not change Europe’s position.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

The European Union is working on its 19th round of sanctions aimed at tightening economic pressure on Russia’s military-industrial complex.
