Aggression often stems from insecurity, and hatred is almost always reactive. It does not set the rules of the game \u2014 it responds to them. To prevent this war from leaving yet another trail of devastation on Ukrainian soil, we must assert true sovereignty.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stop seeing yourself as Europe\u2019s shield or the spearhead of the collective West. Learn not to react to every Russian action like a bull to a red rag. Recognize that, like the vast majority of European nations, the modern Ukrainian nation was formed within the empire. But this does not mean it can or should be driven back into that fold.<\/p>\n

We should focus on building the Ukrainian world, rather than spending our days hunting for and erasing the remnants of the \u201cimperial heritage,\u201d as if in the 18th and 19th centuries the Ukrainian elite did not thrive and make remarkable careers within that very empire. Rewriting history is the fate of the weak and insecure. Let that be Russia\u2019s burden. Its aggression in Ukraine is merely a consequence of the security paranoia that grips the Kremlin.<\/p>\n\t\t
