Over 500 schools in Ukraine may close due to lack of students. From September 1, 2025, the state will not finance educational institutions with fewer than 45 children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“From September 1, 2025, it has been decided not to finance the salaries of teachers in schools with fewer than 45 students from the educational subvention, and from September 1, 2026 – less than 60 students. This decision does not apply to primary schools, which are separate legal entities,” the Ministry of Education reported.<\/p>\n

This decision is due to the fact that such schools are not fully staffed with teachers. Also, teachers often cannot gain enough hours in their core subject to receive a sufficient salary, so in such schools there is a practice of giving teaching of some subjects to non-core teachers.<\/p>\n

The ministry also argues that keeping students in small schools is too expensive for the state.<\/p>\n

“Showing lower quality, rural education costs the state more. On average, the state spends 30.4 thousand hryvnias per year on the education of one student from a village, and 24.4 thousand hryvnias in a city. In some villages, the cost of education for one student reaches over 51 thousand hryvnias,” the institution noted.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that according<\/a> to MP Larisa Bilozir, there are 525 schools in Ukraine with fewer than 45 students.<\/p>\n

“Out of 525 such schools, 127 were liquidated, another part – 133 – was transferred to the status of branches, 48 schools were financed by local budgets, some are in “suspended” – they exist according to documents, but do not work, the fate of another 9 schools is under great question,” the MP reported.<\/p>\n

We remind you that parents of children who are going to first grade this year will be able to receive 5,000 hryvnias<\/a> as part of the new \u201cStudent Package\u201d program. The funds can be used for school supplies, clothes, and shoes. The application must be submitted by November 15, 2025 through the \u201cDiya\u201d application or Monobank. <\/p>\n
