US President Donald Trump has convinced Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to stop blocking Ukraine’s European integration process.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> Politico, citing diplomatic sources, in the context of negotiations on the future membership of Moldova and Ukraine in the European Union.<\/p>\n

The European Union is currently considering opening a negotiating \u201ccluster\u201d with Moldova \u2014 a key step on the path to membership \u2014 before parliamentary elections are held in the country. The move is seen as political support for pro-European forces in Moldova.<\/p>\n

However, Kyiv, as well as a number of its allies in the EU, oppose the hasty promotion of only one candidate. The argument is that in the context of a full-scale war, it is Ukraine that should receive real signals of political support from Brussels.<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of these disputes, the situation has been significantly changed by Donald Trump’s influence on Orban, one of the key opponents of Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Previously, Budapest publicly stated that it would not support Kyiv’s integration, although it advocated Moldova’s accession. However, according to Politico, Orban’s position softened after consultations with Trump.<\/p>\n

This paves the way for the lifting of the Hungarian veto and could change the course of discussions at the EU level. One French official, commenting on the situation, noted:<\/p>\n

“Both Ukraine and Moldova have their advantages as candidates. But decisions in the EU are made only by consensus – and we must adhere to this principle.”<\/p>\n

Brussels expects that key decisions on the further advancement of both countries towards membership could be made in the coming weeks. Diplomats suggest that thanks to Hungary’s change of position, the deadlock around Ukraine’s European integration could be unblocked by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban regarding his blocking of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union<\/a> . The contact took place after Trump’s consultations with Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders on ways to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again opposed Ukraine’s European integration, citing the ongoing war as the main reason.<\/a> The government also published the results of a consultative vote, in which 95% of participants allegedly spoke out against Ukraine’s accession to the EU. In Kyiv, these actions were seen as political manipulation aimed at creating an image of the enemy and distracting Hungarians from domestic problems.<\/p>\n
