President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law stating that the Russian-Ukrainian war that began in 2014 will be called the War for Independence of Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This<\/span> was reported<\/span><\/a> on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada.<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 21, the People’s Deputies supported the Law of Ukraine “On the Principles of the State Policy of the National Memory of the Ukrainian People” with 273 votes “in favor”, and on Friday, August 29, the President signed it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe War for Independence of Ukraine is the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine against the aggression of the Russian Federation, which began on February 19, 2014,\u201d the law states.<\/span><\/p>\n

The document emphasizes that the war is a consequence of the Russian Federation’s imperial policy aimed at denying and destroying Ukrainian statehood and the identity of the Ukrainian people.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the law introduces a number of terms into the legal field, including \u201cstate policy of national memory of the Ukrainian people\u201d, \u201chistorical anti-Ukrainian propaganda\u201d, \u201ccrimes against the Ukrainian people\u201d, \u201cplace of memory of the Ukrainian people\u201d, and also establishes the definition of the term \u201cracism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the document provides for the preservation and protection of national memory, the state language, and cultural heritage \u2014 components of national security.<\/span> And the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance is given the status of a central body of executive power.<\/span><\/p>\n
