On the afternoon of August 30, 2025, Ukrainian politician and public figure Andriy Parubiy was murdered in Lviv. He was an active participant in the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity, held the positions of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and was also a People’s Deputy of several convocations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Pryamy” collected key facts from the biography of the famous politician, who became one of the symbols of opposition to the Russian invasion in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Andriy Parubiy was born on January 31, 1971 in Chervonohrad, Lviv region. He is the grandson of a machine gunner in the Armed Forces of the Ukrainian State and the Ukrainian Galician Army, a participant in the Battle of Lviv in 1918.<\/p>\n

He has been in politics since 1990, when he was elected a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council. In 1991, together with Oleg Tyahnybok, he was one of the founders of the Social-National Party of Ukraine, which was renamed in 2004 into the All-Ukrainian Union “Freedom”.<\/p>\n

He took an active part in the \u201cOrange Revolution\u201d, during the events of November-December 2004 he was the commandant of the Ukrainian House in Kyiv. He was awarded the commemorative badge \u201cDistinguished Participant of the Orange Revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n\t

He has been a People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada since 2007. He was first elected from the “Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense” bloc, later from “Batkivshchyna”. In the current convocation, he was a representative of “European Solidarity”.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Parubiy appealed to the European Parliament to reconsider their negative reaction to the decision of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to award Stepan Bandera the title of Hero of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

That same year, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the time of fugitive President Viktor Yanukovych tried to lift Parubiy’s immunity and open a case by throwing smoke bombs and eggs in the parliament chamber. The events in the Rada took place against the backdrop of the ratification of the infamous “Kharkiv agreements” on the extension of the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea for 25 years.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Parubiy was the initiator of a large-scale brawl in the Verkhovna Rada, which he started in order to disrupt the consideration of the scandalous \u201clanguage law\u201d of the Regionals, Vadym Kolesnichenko and Serhiy Kivalov.<\/p>\n\t

During the Revolution of Dignity, he was an active participant and was the de facto commandant and head of the tent camp and the leader of the Maidan Self-Defense units. After that, in 2014, he became the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, but worked in this position for less than six months.<\/p>\n

He never hid his pro-Ukrainian views, defended the Ukrainian language as the only official language in Ukraine, and called Russians by the names they deserve. In the spring of 2014, he was not afraid to express what may seem obvious today, but was very bold at the time:<\/p>\n

“External aggressors hate the citizens of Ukraine regardless of where we live \u2013 in Donbas or in Lviv\u2026 Moreover, external aggressors very cynically put peaceful citizens in front of them, and stand behind them with machine guns \u2013 hiding, as if behind a human shield, behind women, elderly people, sometimes behind minors. Hiding behind their backs, they seize administrative buildings. This shows that they are indifferent to the fate and lives of Ukrainian citizens,” emphasized the then Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Andriy Parubiy.<\/p>\n\t

In December 2014, an attempt was made on Andriy Parubiy near the Kyiv Hotel. An unknown man threw a grenade during a meeting between the politician and his associates. The then Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov reported that the attack was organized by a terrorist organization, and among the suspects was the former commander of the Internal Troops during the Yanukovych era, Stanislav Shulyak.<\/p>\n

In 2016, he became the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, replacing Volodymyr Groysman, who headed the government. He held this position until August 2019.<\/p>\n

Parubiy was also remembered as one of the lobbyists for the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”, which was adopted in April 2019.<\/p>\n

In 2018, the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv made a decision that obliged the Prosecutor General’s Office to open a pre-trial investigation against the then Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. The reason was his harsh statements that could incite national hatred. In particular, it was about Parubiy’s statement that priests of the UOC (MP) allegedly participated in the murders of Ukrainians. These words caused a wave of indignation among believers.<\/p>\n\t

It should be noted that the former head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Andriy Parubiy, shortly before his death, reposted<\/a> a post by People’s Deputy Mykola Velychkovych about the murder of Mykola Stsiborsky and Omelyan Senyk on August 30, 1941 in Zhytomyr.<\/p>\n

Both were shot while walking to their temporary accommodation. First, Senyk was shot in the back, who died immediately. Then the shooter shot Stsiborsky in the face and neck, whom the doctors tried to save, but he died without regaining consciousness. Both of the murdered were prominent figures in the Ukrainian national movement of the early 20th century.<\/p>\n
