German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Russian President Vladimir Putin currently has no motives to end the war against Ukraine or conclude a peace agreement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said this in an interview with the Sat.1 TV channel.<\/p>\n

According to Merz, the Kremlin’s current position is dictated exclusively by Putin’s own interests, and he is ready to consider negotiations only when it is beneficial to him.<\/p>\n

“Putin will be ready for negotiations only when he feels personally benefited from it. In the meantime, in his opinion, war is beneficial to him: he seizes territories, observes discussions in Europe and the United States, analyzes the behavior of world leaders, in particular at summits like the Shanghai Conference,” Merz emphasized.<\/p>\n

The German Prime Minister emphasized that the West must create conditions that would force the Kremlin to change its calculations. And while military pressure on Russia requires significant resources, economic pressure can be intensified right now.<\/p>\n

“Currently, Putin has no reason to agree to a ceasefire or a peace agreement. Our task is to create such grounds. And this is possible primarily through economic pressure. The Russian military economy must lose its ability to function,” Merz said.<\/p>\n

As an example of an effective tool, the Chancellor proposed the introduction of tariffs for third countries that do not stop trading with Russia and actually support its economy, despite the war.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Russia has expressed its expectation of resuming the negotiation process aimed at ending the war against Ukraine.<\/a> According to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the heads of delegations from both sides continue to maintain direct contact.<\/p>\n

As reported, Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Russia is doing everything to prevent his meeting with Vladimir Putin from taking place.<\/a><\/p>\n
